Hope Starts Here Challenge set for Saturday, May 8
In recognition of Brain Tumor Awareness month, the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center will host its fifth annual Hope Starts Here Challenge on Saturday, May 8.
Proceeds from the event will support and promote awareness of the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center. The UMBTC is a collaborative effort between Marquette General Hospital and Northern Michigan University. Its mission is to empower patients and families dealing with brain tumors through advocacy, research, education and treatment.
There will be five non-competitive options this year suitable for all ages and levels of ability:
- The long ride begins at 9 a.m. is approximately 40 miles. The course will take riders out County Road 553 through Sawyer and back.
- The 15K run begins at 10 a.m. and takes runners out and around picturesque Presque Isle Park.
- The short ride begins at 10:30 a.m. and is approximately five miles. The course will meander through Marquette and parallel the Lake Superior shoreline.
- The walk begins at 10:40 a.m. and travels through Northern Michigan University’s campus. Participants to determine length. Leashed dogs welcome.
- The 5K run begins at 11 a.m. and takes participants down to the shores of Lake Superior and back.
The entry fee for pre-registering is $30 for ages six to adult and includes event of choice, lunch and T-shirt. Those age five and under receive free registration with lunch and t-shirt available for $10. On-site registration in the main lobby at Marquette General Hospital the day of the event is $35. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Participants may opt to increase their contribution by collecting pledges as an individual or a team. The individual or team raising the most money will be honored with a plaque. All riders must wear a bicycle helmet. Cyclists under 18 must have a parent sign a release.
