Hometown Hero Award 2009 for Public Health Awarded by MDCH to UP Resident David M. Luoma, MD, MMM, CPE
The prestigious Michigan Hometown Hero Award was recently presented to native Upper Peninsula resident David M. Luoma, MD, MMM, CPE by the Michigan Department of Community Health in connection with Michigan Public Health Week 2009 celebrations.
Dr. Luoma was honored with a plaque and statements of appreciation at a well-attended awards ceremony presided over by MDCH Director Janet Olszewski on April 21, 2009, at the Capitol Rotunda in Lansing. The award was made in recognition of Dr. Luoma’s 30 years of dedicated professional service, leadership and civic commitment to the residents of the Upper Peninsula with respect to the education of future healthcare professionals, direct care for patients and community involvement.

“I am honored to accept this Hometown Hero Award, which I feel also recognizes the outstanding work of the people of the many organizations and causes with which I am affiliated,” stated Dr. Luoma. “Ensuring the public’s health is critical and our successes are accomplished through our local community-based approach to the education of future healthcare professionals, effective and compassionate provision of healthcare and an ongoing awareness of the healthcare needs of those we have the privilege to care for and serve.”
Offered in connection with the 2009 celebration of Michigan Public Health Week, the Hometown Hero Awards are presented to outstanding citizens nominated by their peers.
MDCH recognized 12 Hometown Health Heroes who worked with others to contribute to the health of their respective communities. Also recognized at the ceremony were eight Public Policy Champions, including Michigan legislators, who introduced legislation to address public health and safety or have otherwise supported public health programs in the state.
In a statement to all awardees, MDCH Director Janet Olszewski said, “I congratulate our Public Policy Champions and Hometown Health Heroes. These individuals and groups are premier examples of what it means to be a health advocate for the people of Michigan. All of their actions have made our state a healthier place to live."
Dr. Luoma serves as CEO of the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation, is community assistant dean of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and is a family medicine physician at FamilyCare Doctors, a service of Marquette General Health System. He is board certified in family medicine and geriatrics.
MDCH recognized Dr. Luoma’s many accomplishments outlined by those who nominated him. These include Dr. Luoma’s ability to actively build collaborations between educational institutions, healthcare providers, public decision makers and funders. He was acknowledged for strengthening the State’s immunization agenda through the Michigan Advisory Committee on Immunization and the Physician Peer Education Project on Immunization,
His contributions to the education of residents at the Marquette Family Medicine Residency and students at the UP Campus were cited.
Also noted was the development of the Northern Area Health Education Center and mentoring youth entering into health professions through service to serve an aging community with the Area Geriatric Education Scholars program.
Dr. Luoma has also served in many leadership roles and on committees at Marquette General as well as the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians and the Michigan State Medical Society and the American Medical Association.
A well-known community member, Dr. Luoma is active in the Marquette Breakfast Rotary Club, Marquette-Alger County Medical Society, Economic Club and many other organizations locally, statewide and nationally. His family is strongly committed to medical service with son Tyson soon attending Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, daughter Kira an undergraduate pre-med major and brother Jerry and nephew Michael practicing physicians in Laurium. A native of Calumet, Dr. Luoma resides in Marquette with his wife Jill and son Tristan.
