Hoenke named Medical Director of all Marquette
General clinics and hospital-owned physician practices

Frederick
P. Hoenke, MD, has been named medical director for all physician
practices owned and operated by Marquette General Health System.
Hoenke’s responsibilities encompass approximately 90 physicians
and 25 mid-level practitioners (physician assistants, psychologists
and nurse practitioners) in 30 physician offices and practices
throughout the Upper Peninsula.
In all, there are more than 200 doctors and approximately 35 mid-level
practitioners on the MGHS medical staff, many of whom are in private
practice.
Hoenke’s responsibilities include quality assurance, hiring
and employment issues, long range planning, financial performance,
productivity, and serving as a communication conduit between employed
physicians and MGHS management.
He will also continue his clinical responsibilities including
office practice at FamilyCare
Doctors in Marquette; hospital rounding; and providing night
call coverage for the MGHS hospitalist service.
Marquette General Health System CEO Bill Nemacheck said, “Dr.
Hoenke is well known and respected by the entire medical staff,
administration, and hospital employees. He has a reputation for
setting high standards, providing outstanding patient care, and
handling difficult issues with fairness and compassion.”

Dr. Hoenke’s caliber in this new role. He has the ability
to balance excellent clinical care standards with a keen financial
eye to assure that our employed physician offices are operated
consistently, and in a financially sound manner.”
Board Certified in family medicine, geriatric medicine, and addiction
medicine, Dr. Hoenke is the assistant director of the Marquette
Family Medicine
Residency Program, and an assistant clinical professor in
the U.P. Campus
of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.
Hoenke has been with Marquette General since 1988. Prior to that,
he was in clinical practice in Hillman and Alpena, Michigan, for
three years.
A graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine,
Hoenke earned his bachelor’s degree Magna Cum Laude in biology
from the University of Cincinnati, where he was inducted into
the honor society of Phi Beta Kappa, and earned High College and
Departmental Honors. During his final year of training in the
Marquette General Family Medicine Residency Program, he served
as chief resident.
Hoenke is also very active in community and religious life, and
has served on numerous advisory boards and committees throughout
the region.
Hoenke and his wife, Gayle, are the parents of eight children:
Erika, Kurt, Ingrid, Guy, Ilsa, Gwen, Ted, and Maria.
Marquette General Health System offices and practices are located
in Escanaba, Gladstone, Grand Marais, Hancock, Harvey, Iron Mountain,
Iron River, Ironwood, Kingsford, Marquette, Negaunee, Ontonagon,
Sault Ste. Marie, and Trenary.
