coach headlines upcoming Sports Medicine Update

Kyle, head coach of the Northern Michigan University hockey Wildcats,
heads a lineup of guest speakers at
the upcoming Sports Medicine Update hosted by Marquette General
Health System.

Kyle, in his second season as coach of the Wildcats after previously
serving as an assistant coach of the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers,
will present on “Motivating Your Team.”
“I will discuss communicating with your team, the importance of setting
goals and reinforcement, and developing chemistry,” Kyle said.
The annual Sports Medicine Update will be held from 9 a.m.
to 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, in the MGH Conference Center. The conference is designed
for coaches of community and school athletic programs, athletic trainers,
physical therapists, EMTs, athletes and parents.
Dr. John Lehtinen, Director of Sports Medicine at Marquette General, will
provide the welcoming address, while neurosurgeon Dr.
Craig Coccia will speak
on “Head
Injuries and Prevention — separating fact from fiction and a coach’s
role in dealing with concussions.”
In addition, Jim Winkler, the head athletic trainer at Northern Michigan
University, will offer information on “Nutritional Supplements,” and Dr.
Michael Grossman, an Ishpeming-based family practice physician who has a special interest
in diabetes care, will discuss, “Diabetes and the Athlete.”

Dr. Lehtinen said the annual Sports Medicine Update is one
of the health system’s
most popular, providing a wealth of knowledge to a diverse audience.
“It’s an excellent conference,” Dr. Lehtinen said. “Attendees
will be provided the latest updates in the field of sports medicine from a talented
array of speakers. It offers an outstanding opportunity to learn from the experts.”
The fee for the Sports Medicine Update is $25. This includes registration,
a snack, lunch, refreshment breaks and handouts. Students with a valid ID
will be charged $12.50.
The Marquette General Conference Center is located in the East Building on
College Avenue. Participants are asked to park in Lot A, located at the corner
of Hebard Court and College Avenue. Attendees are asked to enter the hospital
through the East Entrance canopy, take the elevator to the third floor, and
exit to the right.
