Himes recognized as Physician of the Year, The Nurses' Choice
Nephrologist J. Marc Himes has been selected as recipient of the 2007 Physician of the Year, The Nurses Choice award. The most important factor in the selection of the recipient is the relationship between the physicians and the hospital staff.

“Dr. Himes is always quietly responsive and available,” said Nurse Practitioner Nan Spawr-Seaton. “He maintains a low profile, but is always quick to pick up on an opportunity to teach, support, and encourage the staff.
“Year in and year out he has done this consistently, and always with respect for the knowledge of the least experienced among us,” Seaton said.
Nurses cited Himes’s excellence, dedication, sincerity and enthusiasm, along with the total love and respect he receives from his patients and the staff.
Marquette General CEO Bill Nemacheck said, "Dr. Himes has been a member of our medical staff since 1979. He is well respected, and his quiet, capable nature is appreciated by everyone who works with him.
"Dr. Himes is an exemplary choice for the Physician of the Year, The Nurses Choice award,” Nemacheck said. "He personifies the key characteristics for which the award is given. First and foremost, he trusts and respects all of the members of the health care team, just as they trust and respect him.”
“I’m very thankful for the nursing staff, and for all of the excellent care that they provide for my patients, especially those in dialysis,” Himes said. “They’re a very dedicated, caring group of people. In fact, when some of our patients have had to leave the area, they’ve come back with a renewed appreciation for the high level of care they receive in Marquette.
“Mostly, it’s the people of the Upper Peninsula that I enjoy serving the most,” said Himes, “helping many of them through very difficult times in their lives, and trying to give them the type of care that I’d want for myself and my family.
“I’ve always felt extremely privileged to practice medicine at Marquette General because it’s a very fine and up-to-date facility with wonderful people including support staff, nursing, administration, and the excellent fellow physicians I have the opportunity to work with” he said.
A native of Ann Arbor, Himes said his decision to practice in the Upper Peninsula had its roots at his Finnish grandfather’s farm in Eben. During his youth, Himes enjoyed spending family vacations at the farm, participating in the daily activities, learning about his Finnish heritage, and spending time with his extended family.
During his internal medicine residency in Minneapolis, he learned of an opportunity to take over the practice of nephrologist Dr. Dan Mazzuchi in Marquette. His decision to pursue nephrology as a specialty was strongly influenced by the opportunity to practice in the U.P. and raise his family here.
Board certified in nephrology and internal medicine, Dr. Himes completed his nephrology fellowship and internal medicine residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Prior to that, he earned his medical degree and bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His office practice is at U.P. Internal Medicine located at the Peninsula Medical Center in Marquette.
Previous recipients of the Physician of the Year, The Nurses’ Choice award are Emergency Medicine Physician James Addison MD, Obstetrician-Gynecologist William Addison MD, Infectious Disease Specialist John Wallace MD, and Cardiovascular-thoracic surgeon James Klena MD. The award has been presented annually since 2004.
