U.P. Regional Blood Center
holding Halloween Blood Drive
The Upper
Peninsula Regional Blood Center, a service of Marquette General
Health System, is sponsoring its 27th annual Halloween Blood Drive
now through Friday, Oct. 28. The goal is to collect 600 pints
of blood.

A Blood Donor Costume Party will be held at the Blood Center from
8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26. WMQT Q107 will offer a
live radio broadcast, and Dano’s Pizza and Pepsi
will provide refreshments to all those who donate. Donors
will also receive a coupon for a free six-inch turkey sub from
Subway of Marquette.
Four remote blood drives will take place at the following locations:
· Munising Credit Union from noon to 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday,
Oct. 19.
· Eastwood Nursing Home in Negaunee from noon to 3:45 p.m.
on Thursday, Oct. 20.
· Wesley United Church in Ishpeming from 2 to 5:45 p.m.
on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
· University Center at Northern Michigan University from
noon to 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27.
Donors at the Negaunee, Ishpeming and Marquette
locations above will also be eligible to win other prizes donated
by local businesses, including gift certificates from The Coffee
Cup, Jasper Ridge Brewery and Restaurant, Buck's Family Restaurant,
The Cookie Cutter, K's Oriental, The YMCA of Marquette, Third
Street Video, Nails by Kate and Lawry's Pasty of Ishpeming. In
addition, two lift tickets will be available for Marquette Mountain.
The Blood Center is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to
6 p.m., and Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
To be eligible to donate blood, a person must be at least 17 years
old, in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and have a picture
ID.
The donation process is a quick and simple. A technician performs
a brief medical screening to check blood pressure, pulse, temperature
and hemoglobin levels. This helps assure safe blood for patients,
and also provides a quick check-up for donors.
The entire process takes about 45 minutes, while the actual donation
will only take about 10 minutes.
Volunteer blood donors are the only source for blood used in patient
care in the U.S. The blood donated can be divided into three components:
platelets, plasma and red cells. One pint of blood can be used
to help three different people. Blood donated at the U.P. Regional
Blood Center helps 12 Upper Peninsula hospitals.
