U.P. Regional Blood Center conducting annual

Halloween Blood Drive
Blood Drive

The Upper Peninsula Regional Blood Center, a service of Marquette General Health System, will conduct its annual Halloween Blood Drive Monday, Oct. 18, through Friday, Oct. 29.
This year’s goal is 600 pints of blood.

WMQT Q107 will provide live remote coverage of blood drives at Wesley United Church in Ishpeming from 2 to 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26, and in the University Center at Northern Michigan University from noon to 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28.

For those who donate at the Blood Center or either of the two remote blood drive locations, Subway of Marquette will offer a coupon for a free six-inch sub. Donors will also be eligible to win other great prizes donated by local businesses, including day ski passes to Marquette Mountain, free video rentals from Third Street Video, day passes to the YMCA, a manicure from Nails by Kate, and gift certificates from Buck’s Restaurant in Ishpeming, Jasper Ridge, the Cookie Cutter, Beaneralla’s, Utopia Tanning, and Andriacchi’s Store.

The Blood Center is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

To be eligible to donate blood, a person must be at least 17 years old, healthy, weigh at least 110 pounds, and have a picture ID.

The process of donating is a simple and quick way to help someone who needs blood or blood products to live. Before the actual donation, the donor is given a mini-physical, which includes a temperature check, hemoglobin level, blood pressure and pulse. This is done not only to assure safe blood for patients, but also to provide a quick check-up for the donor.

The entire process takes about 45 minutes. The actual donation of blood takes five to 10 minutes.
Since blood is divided into three main components (red cells, platelets, and plasma,) one pint of blood can be used to help three different people. A patient may need extra red blood cells to replace hemoglobin, which carries iron and oxygen through the body. Also, cancer patients may need platelets replaced after chemotherapy. Plasma is essential for patients with various clotting problems.
