Grief conference scheduled
on Thursday
Pioneer in spirituality and medicine education to speak
Learning how to deal with grief is important
for everyone, but many are unsure where to start.
To address the importance of grieving, Marquette General Health
System, Lake Superior Hospice Association and Canale Tonella Funeral
Home, Inc. will sponsor the 2005 Grief Conference from 8:30 a.m.
to 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, at Steer & Stein in Marquette.
The conference, “Spirituality and Healthcare” will
allow participants to recognize spirituality as a factor that
contributes to health; increase their understanding of how spirituality
is expressed; and understand how health, illness and spirituality
interact with another.
Keynote speaker Christina Puchalski, MD, is an associate professor
of medicine and health care sciences at George Washington University
School of Medicine in Washington D.C. She’s also the founder
and director of the George Washington Institute of Spirituality
and Health.
She will discuss spirituality, the connection between spirituality
and healthcare, and how to incorporate spirituality into healthcare.
Dr. Puchalski has established numerous educational programs for
undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate medical education in
spirituality and medicine.
Puchalski is the recipient of the Association of American Medical
Colleges and Pfizer’s Award for the Medical Humanities Initiative,
and the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey’s faculty Humanism
in Medicine Award.
The seminar is open to interested individuals including: medical
personnel; clergy; hospice and social workers; behavioral health
providers; and enforcement officers. Interested participants must
pre-register. A $45 registration fee includes lunch, refreshment
breaks and handouts.
