Governor’s Award of Excellence for improving care
Marquette
General Health System has received Michigan’s Medicare Quality
Improvement Organization’s (MPRO’s) prestigious 2004

It marks the second consecutive year that Marquette General has

president of quality and review operations; Janet Olszewski, director
of the Michigan Department of Community Health; Carlson; Dr. Luoma;
and Dr. Debra Moss, President/CEO of MPRO.
The award was presented in May at an MPRO ceremony and luncheon
held at the Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath, Mich.
The Governor’s Award of Excellence honors Michigan hospitals
that are engaged in quality initiatives aimed at improving patient
care in the areas mentioned above, along with surgical infection
prevention. The clinical topics that the award measures are designated
as national healthcare priorities by the Centers for Medicare
& Medicaid Services, as well as the Joint Commission on Accreditation
of Healthcare Organizations.
“I firmly believe that every person in this great state
deserves to receive quality health care from their providers,”
Governor Jennifer Granholm said in a written release. “I
am pleased to recognize hospitals and healthcare professionals
that are making progress toward providing our citizens with accessible
and affordable health care.”
MGHS Chief Executive Officer Bill Nemacheck said physicians, medical
staff and the entire MGHS team of employees work extremely hard
to provide the very best in medical treatment and care.
“Our efforts have been enhanced through our collaborations
with MPRO,” Nemacheck said. “We are extremely proud
to again accept this distinguished award.”
Added Dr. Ken Davenport, MGHS Chief of Staff: “This is a
great honor. Our medical staff is committed to providing the finest
available patient care.”
Debra L. Moss, MD, MBA, president and chief executive of MPRO,
cited Marquette General’s continued dedication to improving
quality.
“Marquette General established a multidisciplinary team
to spearhead improvement measures using proven, evidence-based
practices,” Dr. Moss said. “Governor Granholm’s
endorsement of this quality improvement award mirrors her agenda
in her administration’s commitment to improve the quality
of health care for all of Michigan’s residents.
“MPRO is privileged to partner with the Governor to recognize
hospitals such as Marquette General that are achieving measured
improvements in patient care.”
Patricia Winton, Director of Quality Management at Marquette General,
said MPRO’s recognition is the direct result of the tremendous
teamwork in place at MGHS.
“It’s a tremendous honor to again accept the Governor’s
Award for Excellence on behalf of our quality management department,
administration, physicians and staff,” Winton said. “Our
emphasis has been, and will continue to be, improving and maintaining
a culture of patient safety. We will continue to work throughout
the coming year to ensure we receive this award again.”
MPRO, Michigan’s Quality Improvement Organization for the
state’s 1.4 million Medicare beneficiaries is a recognized
leader in healthcare quality improvement, utilization review,
data analysis, research, clinical outreach and consumer education.
Its goal is to improve the quality of health care while ensuring
that it’s delivered in a timely, cost-effective manner.
