MGHS hosting Girls Athletic Conference on Aug. 3
MSU associate women’s basketball coach is the guest speaker
Marquette General Health System will host a
one-day conference on Tuesday, Aug. 3, geared at female athletes
in middle school and high school. It will take place in Room
1 of the Conference Center in the East (1984) building off College
Avenue.
Janel Grimm Burgess, associate head coach of the Michigan State
University women's basketball team, will be the featured speaker.
She will provide motivational tips for being a team player.

Janel Grimm Burgess
Burgess, who works with MSU’S post players, has worked
with Michigan State head coach Joanne P. McCallie for four years.
Before coaching at MSU, she enjoyed a successful career at Iowa
State University where she helped lead the team to back-to-back
NCAA tournament appearances. She was also an All-Big 12 honoree
twice.
Other speakers at the conference include:
· Marquette orthopedic surgeon Wallace
Pearson, M.D., who will identify
exercises for preventing knee injuries.
· Marquette obstetrician/gynecologist Susan
Ritter, M.D., who will discuss
how the female athlete can make smart choices about nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
· MGHS occupational therapists Stephanie
Yakobina and Sheila Yakobina,
who will speak about long-term hand care, preventing arthritis as a result of
injury, and treating hand injuries.
· Neurosurgeon Craig
Coccia, M.D., who will discuss head and spinal cord
injuries in the female athlete.
The conference is intended for female athletes, parents, coaches and athletic
trainers. Seating is limited, so early registration is strongly recommended.
