MGHS health professionals to provide health screenings
at Prime Time Health and Leisure Expo on Saturday, April 16
Lakeview Arena will host 2005 event geared for those 50 and
older
A large number of health professionals from
Marquette General Health System (MGHS) will be available to
provide free health screenings for
older adults attending the eighth annual Prime Time Health and Leisure Expo
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at Lakeview Arena in Marquette.
MGHS, a co-sponsor of the Expo, will again offer a Health Fair at the event.
Numerous free health screenings will be provided, such as cholesterol screenings,
blood sugar screenings, blood pressure checks and pulmonary function testing.
In addition, there will be health information on cancer (including colorectal
kits), osteoporosis, telehealth, home health, volunteer opportunities, and
health and wellness.
The Dietetics Department will again have cooking demonstrations and free samples
for tasting. At least three items will be prepared during the Expo. The cooking
demonstrations will provide quick, easy and healthy tips on cooking, said MGH
dietitian Carol Holman.
“Our tasty samples of various food items show people that healthy cooking
can be fun, good for you, and delicious,” Holman said.
Joann Manty, RN, diabetes educator at MGH, said the Diabetes Education Department
will be at the Expo to administer blood sugar screenings.
“Age is a risk factor for diabetes,” she said. “Large gatherings
are great for community testing and catching undiagnosed people. Early treatment
of diabetes decreases complication rates. It’s a simple test that only
takes 45 seconds.”
MGH departments represented at the health fair include: Education/Diabetes
Education; Marquette General Home Health and Home Medical Equipment; Respiratory
Care; Rehab, including Pet Therapy; Neuroscience/Pain Network; Trauma Department;
Heart Institute; Cancer Center; Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility;
Imaging Services; Telehealth; Volunteers; and Community Relations and Marketing.
Those attending may register for a first aid kit, which will be given following
a random drawing.
The MGH EMS department will also be on hand, providing information on the ambulanceAdvantage program.
