Marquette General hosting
conference on prescription drug abuse
Marquette
General Hospital will be the host site for an upcoming conference
addressing prescription drug abuse.
“Prescription Drug Abuse: Focus on Michigan’s Upper
Peninsula” will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday,
Oct. 13, in the Conference Center at Marquette General.
The program is designed for health care and law enforcement professionals
involved in prescription drug use or regulation, including physicians,
clinic managers, pharmacists, nurses, law enforcement and prosecution.
A number of health care and law enforcement officials are scheduled
to speak at the conference. Dr. Laurie Braker, a family medicine
physician who graduated from the Marquette General Family Medicine
Residency in June, will deliver the keynote address: “Prescription
Opiate Use: Overview of the Problem of Prescription Drug Abuse
in the Upper Peninsula.”

Dr. Braker earned her medical degree from the Northwestern University
Medical School in Evanston, Ill., and holds bachelor’s degrees
in biology and bible from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. She
works in family medicine in Lake Odessa, Mich.
The conference requires an $80 registration fee, which includes
lunch, refreshment breaks and handouts. Students with verification
will be admitted for $40.
The Conference Center is located in the East Building off College
Avenue. Conference attendees are asked to park in Parking Lot
A, located at the corner of Hebard Court and College Avenue. They
can then enter the hospital through the East Entrance canopy,
take the elevator to the third floor, and exit to the right.
