MGHS welcomes new Digestive Health Specialist
Dr. Surrell is a Newberry native

Digestive Health Specialist Dr. James Surrell has joined the Marquette General Digestive Health Clinic and is onstaff at Marquette General Health System.

A board-certified colon and rectal surgeon, Dr. Surrell has been associated with the prestigious Ferguson Clinic in Grand Rapids. In his career, he has earned a reputation as a specialist in colonoscopy, and for the treatment of major colorectal diseases and common anorectal disorders, such as hemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal fistula, perianal abscess and others.

A native of Newberry, Dr. Surrell has maintained a Colorectal Surgery Clinic in Newberry, and will continue to do so from his practice in Marquette.

In Marquette, Dr. Surrell’s practice emphasis will be on colonoscopy, colorectal cancer and polyp screening, and treatment of common anorectal disorders. Dr. Surrell and the Digestive Health Clinic will offer patient care for rectal bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and other digestive problems.
He will see patients at the Marquette General Digestive Health Clinic, located on the fourth floor of the Education Building on College Avenue. At Marquette General, Dr. Surrell will work closely with Family Medicine residency students and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine medical students.

Dr. Surrell completed his surgical training in Grand Rapids and his fellowship training in colorectal surgery at the Ferguson Clinic in Grand Rapids. Dr. Surrell earned his medical degree from Michigan State University and holds an undergraduate degree from Northern Michigan University.
A clinical professor of surgery at the MSU College of Human Medicine, Dr. Surrell has been published in various textbooks and journals, and most recently gave presentations at national meetings in Chicago, Savannah, Ga., and Atlanta. He’s a past president of the Michigan Society of Colorectal Surgeons, the MSU CHM Alumni Association; the Kent County Medical Society; and the Kent Medical Foundation.

Dr. Surrell is a past recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award of NMU. He was recognized as being one of the leaders in his field, and for his exceptional abilities, professional leadership and continuing commitment to education.
