New computer a big hit in Pediatrics Unit
Young Explorer made possible at MGH through philanthropic gifts

The Pediatrics Unit at Marquette General Hospital has a new toy.
And is it ever a huge hit with the kids.

The waiting room now features a Little Tikes Young Explorer computer specifically designed for children between the ages of three and seven. This technology, which enhances critical and cognitive thinking skills, problem-solving abilities and analytical thinking, was made possible through philanthropic gifts made to the Marquette General Foundation.

“We’re fortunate to have the Little Tykes Young Explorer because it’s appropriate for several developmental levels, providing hours of entertainment for patients during hospitalization,” said Sarah Harnett, child life specialist for the Marquette General Women’s and Children’s Center. “The hospital can be a scary place for young children.  Items like the Young Explorer help create a child-friendly atmosphere, making the hospital seem more like home and make the child feel more comfortable and in control. In turn, the hospital seems less scary. Staff, parents and kids are all grateful to have such a unique system at Marquette General Hospital.”

The equipment, valued at more than $2,500, was popular the minute it was set up in the Pediatrics Unit, explains Clinical Director Mike Phillips.

“We’re very thankful to receive this,” Phillips said. “More importantly, our pediatric patients now have an exciting piece of electronic equipment to help them pass the time while they’re recovering in our hospital.”

The equipment features a think centre PC, an internal DVD-Rom, a sound card with two external speakers and a 19-inch widescreen flat panel LCD monitor. The pre-loaded software package includes Millie’s Math House, Sammy’s Science House and Bailey’s Book House. Left and right built-in mouse pads and a bench seat that fits two children are included.

The Marquette General Women’s and Children’s Center has a number of items on its “Wish List” that would benefit from charitable support. Those interested in learning more or in making a charitable gift to the Marquette General Foundation to help support are encouraged to call 225-6914 or visit www.mgh.org/foundation to learn more.
