Marquette General Heath System names Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Thomas Noren has been named Chief Medical Officer for Marquette General Health System. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, Dr. Noren’s primary responsibilities are quality management, teamwork among physicians, medical education, regional physician communication, and clinical and financial best practices.

Dr. Noren has a long history of providing patient care in the Upper Peninsula. He has been on active staff at MGHS for 17 years as a gastroenterologist and partner at Upper Peninsula Digestive Disease Associates, P.C., in Marquette. Prior to that he was an internal and family medicine physician at Doctors Park Family Physicians in Escanaba for 11 years. All together, he has provided patient care for 29 years at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba, where he served as consulting staff, active staff, chief of staff and chair of the Quality Assurance committee. Since 1991, Dr. Noren has been an assistant clinical professor for the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

MGHS Chief of Staff Dr. Debra Morley added, "The medical staff and I look forward to working with Dr. Noren in his new role as Chief Medical Officer."
A native of Detroit, Dr. Noren was named one of the Best Doctors in America for 2007-08 by Boston-based Best Doctors, Inc. Only those doctors recognized to be in the top three to five percent of their specialty earn this honor. In 1993, he earned the Instructor of the Year Award, and in 2001 he earned the Senior Award, both presented by the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program. In 1974, he earned the Mosby Award from the University of Michigan for ranking number two in his graduating class.
Dr. Noren is a past member of the Medical Advisory Panel for MGHS. From 1995-2000 he was a columnist of What’s Flying for The Mining Journal, a series on birding that he created.
Board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Noren completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Health Sciences – The Chicago Medical School. He completed a family medicine residency and an internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado Medical Center. He earned a medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Noren was elected Phi Beta Kappa as an undergraduate at UM, and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society while in medical school.
Dr. Noren resides in Harvey with his wife, Susan. They have four children and four grandchildren.
