3 MGHS medical clinics honored by MPRO Presented Governor’s Award for Excellence
for Improving Preventive Care in the Ambulatory Care Setting

Three Marquette General Health system physician offices have been honored for improving the quality of patient care.

North Shore Internal Medicine in Escanaba, Marquette Medical Clinic-Iron River and MMC-Kingsford have been presented the Governor’s Award of Excellence for Improving Preventive Care in the Ambulatory Care Setting. MMC-Iron River has won the award three consecutive years.

The three clinics are among 165 physician offices in Michigan recognized.

The award, presented by Michigan’s Peer Review Organization (MPRO), is the organization’s most prestigious. Award recipients have demonstrated leadership in quality improvement efforts in breast cancer screening, influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia immunizations, and diabetes screenings to prevent complications.

“Preventing and catching disease early is the key to good health,” said Debra l. Moss, MD, MBA, president and chief executive officer of MPRO. “It is clear that physicians’ offices in Michigan are taking preventive care seriously. Preventive care is an investment in our health that we cannot afford to neglect.”

MPRO, Michigan’s Quality Improvement Organization, works with physicians’ offices, hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies and managed care plans to improve patient care for Michigan’s 1.4 million Medicare beneficiaries. It also bestows an annual Governor’s Award of Excellence to Acute Care and Critical Access Hospitals.

MGHS Chief Executive Officer Bill Nemacheck applauds the clinics for their hard work.
“Providers and employees at our clinics work extremely hard to provide preventive services and early disease detection,” he said. “It is an honor to have three clinics receive the Governor’s award.”

Earlier this summer, MGHS was the recipient of the 2004 Governor’s Award of Excellence for Improving Care in the Hospital Setting. Awarded by the MPRO, the prestigious award recognizes outstanding quality improvement practices. MGHS received the inaugural award for improving care in three categories: Acute Myocardial Infarction (heart attack), congestive heart failure and pneumonia.
