Friday, April 23, 2010
Marquette General Health System will sponsor the Cancer Update: Advancements in Patient Care from 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Friday, April 23, at Marquette General Hospital’s Conference Center. This conference is intended for cancer care professionals.
Conference speakers and topics include:
- Integration of CINV Guidelines into Patient Care by Peg Esper, MSN, RN, APRN-BC, of the University of Michigan. She will provide oncology nurses with a comprehensive understanding of evidence-based guidelines for the management of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
- Happiness in a Storm: The Challenge of Healing Cancer Patients by Dr. Wendy Harpham, MD, internist, cancer survivor, award-winning author, and mother of three.
- Genetic Risk/Genetic Counseling by Rebecca Jo MacFalda, MS, CGC, from the Michigan State University. Genetic testing is offered to individuals who are determined to have a high-risk cancer history. It’s recommended that everyone considering genetic testing also undergo counseling.
- Breast Cancer: Surgery Options by Dr. Deimante Tamkus, Assistant Professor, Division of Hematology/Oncology, Michigan State University. She will compare breast conserving surgery and mastectomy for breast cancer focusing on clinical trial data and patient outcome, and will discuss post surgical recurrence patterns and the impact of breast MRI on surgical decision-making.
- Case Studies in the Proactive Management of Indolent and Mantle Cell Lymphomas by Dr. Chris Friese, RN, PhD, AOCN, from the University of Michigan. Participants will learn clinical presentation and treatment regimens for the difficult to treat indolent and mantle cell lymphomas, identify side effects of therapy, and interventions for symptom management of frequently occurring side effects.
- Treatment and Symptom Management of Metastatic Breast Cancer for Oncology Nurses by Lita Smith, MSN, RN, NP, from the University of Michigan. She will present three case studies that focus on treatment options and nursing management strategies for patients with metastatic breast cancer. Because correct administration of agents and optimal side effect monitoring and management improve patient outcomes, it’s crucial for oncology nurses to be educated in emerging treatment options and related side effects.
A $90 registration fee includes continental breakfast, refreshments, lunch and materials. Pre-registration is required. Continuing education credit is available for nurses and physicians.
To register, call the MGHS Education Department at (906) 225-3470 or (800) 562-9753, ext. 3470 or go online to http://www.mgh.org/97conf.html.
