Camp 911 for Seniors Coming to Marquette County
Registrations are being accepted from area seniors interested in attending the third annual Marquette County Camp 911 for Seniors program scheduled for Thursday, June 21st. Camp 911 is being planned and hosted by Marquette General Health System, local emergency service agencies, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and TRIAD. This one-day event, running from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Negaunee Township Hall, will provide local seniors with information on safety issues related to the older population.
Topics that will be covered include fall prevention, flexibility and strengthening exercises, the Life Tracker system, chest pain and emergency treatment, File of Life, setting up a shelter in times of a disaster, and a demonstration of the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Informational booths will be set up along with take home materials.
Kathy Herrala, Director of RSVP feels this Camp 911 for Seniors program will provide area seniors with much needed information about safety awareness. “It’s going to be a great day with lots of good information participants can bring home,” said Herrala. “The day will also provide participants with the opportunity to learn more about how to keep safe, and what they can do in preparing for an emergency at home.”
According to Gary Gustafson, MGHS Injury Prevention Coordinator and EMS Paramedic/RN, falls are the #1 cause of traumatic injury in the elderly. Frequently these are lifelong debilitating injuries that often result in subsequent nursing home placement. Gustafson added, “Deaths resulting from falls in the elderly are not uncommon. Providing useful and practical information that will reduce the potential for falls is the key to prevention.”
The Marquette County Camp 911 for Seniors event is scheduled for Thursday, June 21st and will be held at the Negaunee Township Hall. Registration forms are available at numerous sites throughout the county with program attendance limited to 100. For additional information, or to register for Camp 911, please contact Kathy Herrala at RSVP at 226-4184.
