Bone Marrow Donor Drive to be held at Marquette General Hospital

The Marquette General Cancer Center, in conjunction with the Michigan Community Blood Centers, will hold a Bone Marrow Donor Registry Drive on Monday, September 28 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on the third floor of the Neldberg building, near the escalators, at Marquette General Hospital.

Registering to donate is free of charge, pain-free and simple. Donors must be between the ages of 18-60, fill out a questionnaire and do a quick swab on the inside of the mouth (no blood is drawn).

According to the National Marrow Donor Program, on any given day more than 6,000 men, women and children are searching for a life-saving donor. In the Upper Peninsula, seventeen people have donated their marrow or stem cells to save a life.

Bone marrow transplants may represent the best hope of survival for people with life-threatening blood diseases such as aplastic anemia and some kinds of leukemia. Donors can be found within a patient’s family only about 30 percent of the time. The other 70 percent of patients need to find unrelated volunteer donors.

No appointments are necessary. For more information, please call (906) 225-3500.
