AGES 2009

AGES Applications Available for Summer 2009 Paid Youth Placements

UP students can get paid this summer while learning about healthcare careers serving our aging neighbors! Applications are now available for the Area Geriatric Education Scholars (AGES) program for UP high school students for placements from June through August to learn about healthcare careers such as nursing, medicine and physical therapy. Students participating in AGES connect with elderly nursing home residents, get pre-career clinical experience, provide a valuable community service and are paid for their efforts through AGES which is sponsored by the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation (UPHEC).

During their AGES placements at local nursing homes, students lead resident activities, job shadow healthcare professionals and attend training about geriatric health issues and health care technology (e.g. simulation and telehealth) while being trained in adult CPR.

Students work for 7 hours up to 20 hours per week and earn up to $1,000 for the summer. AGES 2009 internship placements in Marquette County will be at the Eastwood Nursing Center (Negaunee), D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans (Marquette), Marquette County Medical Care Facility (Ishpeming), Mather Nursing Center (Ishpeming) and Norlite Nursing Center (Marquette). Ten other sites around the UP are partnering in the program. All AGES students attend a required 3-day orientation from June 17-19 before their placements at Northern Michigan University. and Marquette General Health System in Marquette, where they are introduced to geriatric health issues, local healthcare professionals and facilities, and also receive training and certification in adult CPR.

Applicants to the AGES program must be at least 16 years of age by June 17, 2009, have just completed their junior or senior year at a UP high school and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The complete application includes a written application form, interest essay, letter of reference and an interview. AGES applications, program information and acknowledgements to AGES partners are available on UPHEC’s website at www.mgh.org/uphec. Applications are due on May 8.

Through the sponsorship of the UPHEC along with community partners and funders, AGES has trained and placed 85 UP high school students at 15 long-term care sites region-wide since 2006. Since 1974, UPHEC has operated the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s rural UP campus, the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program and pre-healthcare career programs at the college and K-12 level region-wide such as AGES. UPHEC is a non-profit entity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Partial funding to date for the local AGES 2009 program has been provided by Marquette Breakfast Rotary, Marquette Community Foundation (Negaunee Fund), Marquette Community Foundation (Ishpeming Fund), Upper Peninsula Health Plan, Upper Peninsula Healthcare Network and UPPCO.
