MGH nurse receives certification in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing
Registered Nurse Jamie Skewis has recently passed the National Certification Corporation’s exam in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing. Skewis has worked as an RN in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at MGHS for nearly 13 years. She was also the health coordinator for Negaunee Public Schools from 2005-2007.
Skewis is one of 21 other RNs in the NICU and Family Birthing Center who are certified in their nursing specialty.
A native of Negaunee, Skewis began her career at MGHS in 1996, starting in the Pediatrics/Special Care Nursery department. She earned her BSN from the Northern Michigan University College of Nursing in 1995, and graduated from Negaunee High School.
Skewis currently resides in Negaunee Township with her husband and two children. In addition to her nursing career, she was a Negaunee Co-Op Preschool board member from 2004-2008. She is currently involved in her children’s Lakeview Elementary school activities. In addition, Skewis presents to 8th grade students at Negaunee Middle School on the aspects of being a nurse.
After meeting all the qualifications, Skewis traveled to Wisconsin to take the exam.
NICU nurses care for newborn babies who are delivered prematurely (neonates) or experience complications at the time of birth. A nurse specializing in Neonatal Intensive Care needs highly specialized skills in the evaluation and care of neonates and sick infants.
To be eligible for Neonatal Intensive Care certification, an RN must have a minimum of 24 months experience compromised of 2000 hours. The exam contains questions covering the assessment and management of infants, their pathophysiologic status and psychosocial/behavioral adjustments. It also addresses maternal factors, delivery factors and after-birth factors.
