U.P. Regional Blood Center in Marquette holding Halloween Blood Drive
The Upper Peninsula Regional Blood Center in Marquette, a service of Marquette General Health System, is sponsoring its 30th annual Halloween Blood Drive now through Friday, October 31.
Everyone who donates at the Marquette Blood Center from October 20 to October 31 will receive a free water bottle and three free coupons that include a six-inch sub from Subway, a game of bowling from Country Lanes in Ishpeming and a one-week pass to Tourville West Fitness Center.
Also, a Blood Donor Costume Party will be held at the Marquette Blood Center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, October 27. WMQT Q107 will offer a live radio broadcast, and Jimmy John’s subs and Domino's subs will be provided free to all those who donate.
The Marquette Blood Center is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
To be eligible to donate blood, a person must be at least 17 years old, in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and have a picture ID.
The donation process is a quick and simple. A technician performs a brief medical screening to check blood pressure, pulse, temperature and hemoglobin levels. This helps assure safe blood for patients, and also provides a quick check-up for donors. The entire process takes about 45 minutes, while the actual donation will only take about 10 minutes.
Volunteer blood donors are the only source for blood used in patient care in the United States. The blood donated can be divided into three components: platelets, plasma and red cells. One pint of blood can be used to help three different people. Blood donated at the U.P. Regional Blood Center helps 13 Upper Peninsula hospitals.
