Marquette General, Rangers to hold third annual “Paint the Rink Pink” event to raise money for breast cancer patients
New this year: tailgate party, pink ice, celebrity goalie contest, and much more
The Marquette Rangers hockey team is partnering with Marquette General Hospital and the Marquette General Foundation on the third annual fundraiser to benefit the Marquette General Cancer Center.

The effort will culminate on Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 p.m. with the third annual “Paint the Rink Pink” home game at Lakeview Arena, where the Rangers will wear customized pink jerseys that will be auctioned off at the end of the game.
To kick-off the event, a tailgate party will be held from 5:30 – 7 p.m. before the game.
There will be refreshments and food, and entertainment provided by the Flat Broke Blue Band, courtesy of mBank. Since its inception in 2007, the Paint the Rink Pink fundraiser has raised more than $31,000. The money has been used for certification for a Cancer Center nurse in breast health, providing prostheses to uninsured cancer patients and offsetting the cost of new digital mammography equipment. The funds raised from this year’s game will support the Marquette General Cancer Treatment Program.
“In 2008, 189 breast cancer patients were treated at Marquette General Hospital – that means someone in the Upper Peninsula is diagnosed with breast cancer every two days,” said Terry Reser, program director of the Marquette General Cancer Center. “It’s very important to create awareness and educate the public about this disease. We want people in the community to come and support those in their community that have been diagnosed with breast cancer.”
The team will once again wear pink jerseys, which will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds going to the Marquette General Cancer Center. The minimum bid for a jersey will be $100. And a new twist this year—the ice will be dyed a shade of pink. In addition to pink ice, this year’s game has many new add-ons, such as a celebrity goalie contest with a chance for game-goers to win a flat-screen TV.
“The ‘Paint the Rink Pink’ charity hockey game is quickly becoming an iconic event in the central U.P. and the Rangers’ organization very much appreciates having the opportunity to team with the Marquette General Foundation and the MGH Cancer Center for this wonderful cause,” said Dave Saint-Onge, Marquette Ranger’s president and general manager. “We have said since the day our team was announced four years ago that if the greater Marquette community puts its arms around us, we will repay the gratitude many times over. This event is an example of our continuing commitment to making our community a better place. Hockey is a great game with much tradition, especially here in the U.P. The Pink Game is a wonderful mix of this old school pageantry and modern day reality and our players are excited to play.” Also new this year is more merchandise, which has expanded to include pink hockey pucks, T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, hooded and crew neck sweatshirts, and baseball hats. Merchandise can be purchased at the Marquette Ranger’s office at Lakeview Arena, or at Marquette General Hospital’s Employee Health and Wellness office, located on the 1st floor of the hospital near Radiology/Imaging.
The merchandise will also be available for purchase at the Saturday, October 17, Rangers Tailgate Party and Game at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. Tickets for the “Paint the Rink Pink” Rangers game can be purchased at the Lakeview Arena Box Office, the Rangers Office at Lakeview Arena, or by calling (906) 225-9077.
