Nursing
Nurse Extern Program MGHS will not be offering an externship program at this time Each summer Marquette General Health System offers a nursing externship for third year nursing students. The program offers externs twelve weeks of paid, hands-on training at our regional medical center in Marquette Michigan. Student nurses are able to gain clinical experience on a variety of units including medical, surgical, oncology, cardiac, intensive care, neuro/ortho, hemodiaysis and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The externship is provided to approximately ten students each summer, and provides students opportunities to observe, demonstrate and learn nursing procedures under the direct supervision of an MGH-employed registered nurse (RN) preceptor. The goal of the program is to increase the extern's knowledge and skills in patient assessment, clinical judgment, technical skills, organization, decision-making and problem solving. Julie Higbie, RN, MSN and Mary Reynolds-Keegan, RN, MSN coordinate the Nurse Extern Program. "It's designed to stimulate critical thinking skills for student nurses as they gain hands-on experience, making the transition from student to RN easier." Higbie said. "It gives students the ability to collaborate with other healthcare professionals." To be eligible for the program, externs must have completed the Medical/Surgical clinical rotation of their nursing program. For more information, please contact the human resources department.
