What's
New in Radiology
Here is a brief
summary of procedures and exams available at MGH to you and your
patients:
CT ANGIOGRAPHY
- Assess peripheral vascular disease
- Assess Pulmonary embolism
- Identify renal artery stenosis that may be causing or lead to
hypertension
- Identify aneurysms in the aorta and other major blood vessels
- Identify dissection in the aorta or its major branches
- Identify aneurysms or arteriovenous malformations within the brain
- Detect thrombosis(clots) in the veins
- Detect coronary artery disease.
MR ANGIOGRAPHY
(MRI study of blood vessels)
Detect, diagnose and aid in the treatment of heart disorders, stroke
and blood vessel diseases. MRA provides detailed images of blood
vessels using GADOLINIUM WHICH IS NOT NEPHROTOXIC. The procedure
is painless, and the magnetic field is not known to cause tissue
damage of any kind. MRA can help diagnose: vessel anomalies, renal
artery stenosis, vasculitis, coronary artery blockages that could
affect the functional capacity of the heart, heart pump function
better known as ejection fraction and valvular problems including
stenosis and insufficiency, carotid artery disease. We have a special
boot coil that is fantastic at obtaining good pictures of the distal
legs for peripheral vascular disease, especially great for patients
with non-healing ulcers and renal disease.
BREAST IMAGING
MGH is the only hospital/clinic to provide SAME DAY service and
is the only institution that offers breast MRI and MRI guided biopsies
with on site interpretation in the Upper Peninsula.
ESI
(EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTIONS)
Typically used to alleviate chronic low back and/or leg pain, an
epidural injection delivers steroids directly into the epidural
space.
The efficacy of the injection tends to be temporary - providing
pain relief for one week to one year.
An epidural can be very beneficial for patients during an episode
of severe back pain, resulting in sufficient pain relief to allow
the patient to progress with their rehabilitation program.
RFA
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
- A method developed to treat liver cancers without surgery or chemotherapy.
- A useful and popular way to destroy or slow the growth of many
tumors of the liver.
ANGIOJET
THROMBECTOMY (catheter-based procedure used for thrombolysis)
Used to break up a blood clot that is causing partial or full obstruction
of blood flow in an artery or vein
Delivers a saline solution under high pressure into the artery or
vein and directly at the blood clot
Saline jets create a powerful vacuum within the vessel, breaking
up the clot, and removing pieces through the catheter.
ATHRECTOMY
- Primarily used to alleviate severe leg pain
- Catheter-based FDA-approved device for removal of de novo and
stenotic lesions from peripheral arteries
- Rotating blade shaves away plaque from inside the artery
RETRIEVABLE
INFERIOR VENA CAVA FILTERS
Also known as the IVC filter and Greenfield filter, is a medical
device implanted into the inferior vena cava to prevent pulmonary
emboli (PEs)
IVC filters are used if the patient has a contraindication to anticoagulation
or the anticoagulants are ineffective and the patient has had recurrent
PEs.
