ENDOVASCULAR
ABDOMINAL ANEURYSM REPAIR
A minimally-invasive repair of a life-threatening situation is presently being
performed in the operating room at MGH. The doctors of Cardiovascular Thoracic
Associates, Upper Great Lakes Vascular, Surgical Associates, and Dr. Mehall of
MGH Radiology perform this procedure. The Ancare Endograft System is provided
by Guidant Corporation (www.guidant.com).
After the patient is diagnosed, evaluated, and requests the procedure, he or
she is scheduled for surgery. The procedure is performed with a team approach,
utilizing staff members from Anesthesia, Surgical, Radiology, and a representative
of the Guidant Corporation.
Endoscopic Abdominal Aneurysm Repair typically involves two incisions in the
groin area. Endovascular instruments and implants are passed through the great
vessels under observation of Fluoroscopy. The procedure is performed under general
anesthesia and typically takes 2-3 hours.
The patient is monitored closely after the procedure, although the hospital stay
is much shorter than with the conventional approach. Follow-up with the physicians
for aftercare takes place in the days and months following discharge. Close
