Neuroscience Physicians

Neurologists -


diagnose and treat problems of the nervous system without using surgery. They may also consult in treating chronic pain, and/or make referrals to neurosurgeons if needed.

These are some of the disorders treated by neurologists: headache epilepsy stroke Parkinson's disease multiple sclerosis myasthenia gravis muscular dystrophy brain and spinal cord tumors pain (especially headache) neuritis(inflammation of nerves) muscle disorders

Kinds of symptoms patients have:

- paralysis - dizziness
- numbness - seizures
- blackouts - tingling
- lack of coordination - weakness

Other conditions that may need a neurology referral:

- diabetes - hypertension - cancer

Neurosurgeons -


offer state-of-the-art surgical and nonsurgical management covering all types of neurological disease.

These include:

- spine disorders - nerve disorders of the arms & legs
- stroke - disease of blood vessels in the head & neck
- brain tumors - movement disorders
- head injury

Neuroradiologists -


are radiologists who produce and interpret images of the brain and spine. Neuroradiologists are usually needed to fully evaluate a patient's symptoms, from headache to low back pain.

Their diagnostic tools include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) computed tomography (CT), and angiography

Pain management specialist -

A pain management specialist is a unique physician with specialized training in the management of acute, chronic and cancer pain in adults.

All types of pain are treated including:

Nerve pain; pain relating to chronic illnesses such as diabetes; post-operative pain lasting longer than expected; pain related to low back injury or disease, arthritis in the low back or disk disease.

The path and the goal:

The goal of treatment is reducing pain to the greatest extent possible. Pain management specialists usually see patients by referral through a coordinator from a pain network. The patient can enter the pain network system directly from a physician referral, specialty clinic or therapy center referral, or by calling Marquette General Health System’s Upper Michigan Pain Evaluation and Treatment Network toll free at: (888) 995-Pain

Emergency Physicians -


In the event of brain attack (stroke) or trauma to the brain, spinal cord or nerves throughout the body, emergency physicians are the first line of defense.

If stroke occurs, emergency physicians determine whether tPA, a revolutionary clot-busting drug should be administered.

The Emergency Department at Upper Michigan's Regional Medical Center receives trauma from throughout the region, and these physicians are on staff 24 hours a day every day of the year.

They also have the resources of Advanced Life Support EMS paramedics, and a full complement of other specialists on call at all times.

Other specialists -


working in close cooperation with the neuroscience doctors are orthopaedic surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, cancer specialists, respiratory specialists, thoracic surgeons and a variety of others.

Neuropsychologists -


diagnose and treat behavior related to injury of the brain and nervous system.

Treatment may include:
- training undamaged areas of the brain to take on some of the work of damaged areas
- memory training treatment for emotional problems.

Neuropsychologists may treat patients who have had a brain injury or stroke suffer from chronic pain have epilepsy have attention deficit disorders have learning disabilities have behavior problems due to neurologic injury such as mood swings, short temper, memory loss, or loss of inhibitions.

are offered by several neuroscience specialists in Escanaba, Hancock, Iron Mountain, Ishpeming, Kingsford, Newberry, Sault Ste. Marie. These clinics provide evaluation and follow-up care close to home for patients in these areas.
