The Cytology Section of the MGHS Laboratory provides testing for vaginal, cervical, endocervical pap smears, fine needle aspirations from all body sites, nongyn body specimens (urine, sputa, body fluids, thoracentesis, paracentesis, cerebrospinal fluid, etc.) and provides fine needle aspiration collection services. These services are offered to hospitals and physician offices throughout the Upper Peninsula, and any other reference clients. The Cytology Section participates in CAP proficiency testing programs and is inspected by JCAHO and the State of Michigan. The Cytology Section utilizes the Bethesda System for signing out pap smears and is involved in an extensive Quality Assurance program that meets or exceeds all CLIA '88 and JCAHO mandates. The Cytology Section is staffed Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. All questions concerning testing or specimen requirements can be directed to the MGHS Client Service Representatives, Specimen Room, Cytology Section Medical Director, or the Cytology Section Supervisor. The Histology Section of the MGHS Laboratory provides testing of all tissue specimens. The Histology Section provides a full selection of routine and Immunoperoxidase stains for tumor diagnosis in addition to Tissue Consultations, Frozen Sections, and a weekly Tumor Board presentation that is electronically broadcast across the Upper Peninsula. The Histology Section participates in CAP proficiency testing programs and is inspected by JCAHO and the State of Michigan. The Histology Section is staffed Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. In addition, there is Saturday shift coverage to handle all stat cases to prevent delays in diagnosis and patient treatment.
