Core Laboratory
Chemistry The Chemistry Section of the MGHS Laboratory does a high volume of routine chemistry and stat chemistry testing. Most of the testing is done as samples arrive in the section on highly automated analyzers. We also do therapeutic drug, blood gas, and medical drug of abuse testing. Most tests are done on serum or plasma. Urine, cerebrospinal fluid and other body fluids are also tested. The Chemistry Section is accredited by the JCAHO. We also participate in the CAP Proficiency Testing Program. The Chemistry Section is staffed with chemistry specialists, medical technologists and technicians. Questions concerning testing or specimen requirements should be directed to the MGHS Laboratory Client Service Representatives, Specimen Room, Chemistry Section or the Chemistry Supervisor. Special Chemistry The Special Chemistry section of the MGHS Laboratory provides analytical testing for a wide variety of substances using automated and manual techniques. Testing includes: Thyroid Hormones, Reproductive Hormones, Vitamin analysis, Fetal Maturity, Cardiac markers, Tumor markers, Electrophoresis and Immunofixation, Toxicology, Glycohemoglobins, Proteins and Immunoglobulins, Vitamin absorption tests (Schillings tests), Radioimmunoassay and Radioisotopic labeling procedures. The Special Chemistry Section is staffed for routine testing during the day and afternoon shifts, with 24 hour testing available for a select "stat" menu including cardiac markers, HCG titers, Emergency Toxicology, and Fetal Maturity testing. The section participates in CAP proficiency testing programs and is inspected regularly by JCAHO. Questions concerning testing or specimen requirements can be directed to the MGHS Laboratory Client Service Representatives, Specimen Room, the Special Chemistry Section or the Section Supervisor. Hematology The Hematology Section of MGHS Laboratory encompasses three areas: hematology, coagulation, and routine analysis, servicing a full range of clients including veterinary clinics. Testing is performed on blood, urine, feces, semen, and other body fluid types. Analyzers in the sections are: Beckman Coulter LH750 and LH500 hematology analyzers, Forcyte veterinary hematology analyzer, Siemens BCS XP’s coagulation analyzers, Dade Behring PFA100 platelet function instrument, ChronoLog whole blood lumi-ionized calcium aggregometer, and the Iris iQ 200 Automated Urinalysis System. General routine tests and a variety of specialized tests are performed (i.e. LAP stain, Kleihauer-Betke, body fluid counts/differential, fluid crystals by polarized light, semen analysis, platelet function analysis, whole blood platelet aggregation, vonWillebrand ristocetin cofactor, vonWillebrand antigen, Factor V Leiden screen, Protein C and S, Antithrombin III, Plasminogen, Anti-XA and Low Molecular Weight heparin monitoring, Factor VIII and IX Assays, DVVT screen and confirmation, Reptilase, Hexagonal Phospholipid, Bleeding Diathesis Panel, Thrombosis/Hypercoagulability Panel, Inhibitor Screen, and LAC work-up. The section is enrolled in the CAP Proficiency Program. Questions or concerns about testing or specimen requirements can be directed to MGHS Client Service representatives, Specimen Processing, Hematology Department, the Hematology Supervisor, or Core Laboratory Manager. Serology The Serology Section of the MGHS Laboratory provides testing for a variety of antibody and antigen disease markers. The testing includes Auto Immune, Viral, Congenital diagnostics, and various Bacterial disease markers. The section participates in CAP proficiency testing programs and is inspected regularly by the AABB, FDA, and JCAHO. The section provides donor infectious disease marker testing for the U.P. Regional Blood Center. The Serology Section is staffed from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and provides stat testing for Bacterial Meningitis Antigens and Mononucleosis Heterophile Antibodies 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. All questions concerning testing or specimen requirements can be directed to the MGHS laboratory Client Service Representatives, Specimen Room, Serology Section or Serology Supervisor. |
