  | Both plasma and urine are required for this test. Plasma Draw blood in a green-top (heparin) tube(s) from a fasting patient. (Thrombin-activated tube is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 0.5 mL (pediatric: 0.25 mL) of heparinzied plasma frozen in plastic vial. Note: 1. Include family history, clinical condition (asymptomatic or acute episode), diet, and drug therapy information. 2. Patient's age is required on request form for processing. 3. Label specimen appropriately (plasma). Urine 1.0 mL from a random urine collection. Freeze immediately, and send specimen frozen in a plastic, 13-mL urine tube. Note: 1. Include family history, clinical presentation (asymptomatic or acute episode), diet, and drug therapy information. 2. Patient's age is required on request form for processing. 3. Label specimen appropriately (urine). |
Clinical Utilities
Diagnosing inborn errors of amino acid metabolism
Amino acid analysis may also have clinical importance in the
evaluation of several acquired conditions, including endocrine,
liver, muscle, neoplastic and neurological disorders; nutritional
disturbances; renal failure; and burns.
