  | One nasopharyngeal (not throat, nose, or nasal) specimen collected on a rayon swab with an aluminum or plastic shaft should be placed in transport medium such as Stuart's with charcoal or Amies with charcoal (Transwab Nasopharyngeal with Charcoal System) for shipping. Note: 1. The following specimens may be inhibitory to PCR testing and will be rejected: A. Calcium alginate swabs B. Cotton-tipped swabs C. Swabs sent in gel transport medium D. Swabs sent in viral or universal transport medium 2. Stuart's or Amies medium without charcoal will also be rejected. Alternatively, a nasopharyngeal (not throat) aspirate/wash or nasal aspirate/wash can be collected and transported in a screw-capped, sterile container within 24 hours of collection. Send specimen refrigerated. Note: 1. Specimen source is required on request form for processing. |
