Draw blood in a green-top (heparin) tube(s) following an overnight
(12-14 hour) fast. Patient must not consume any alcohol or ingest
Vitamin supplement 24 hours before the specimen is drawn. 
(Plasma gel tube is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 
1.0 mL of  heparinized plasma frozen in plastic vial. Protect 
specimen from prolonged exposure to light.
Note:      1. Indicate plasma on request form.
                  2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma). 

Serum
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s) following an overnight
(12-14 hour) fast. Patient must not consume any alcohol or ingest
Vitamin supplement for 24 hours before the specimen is drawn. 
(Serum gel tube is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 
1.0 mL of serum frozen in plastic vial. Protect specimen from 
prolonged exposure to light.
Note:     1. Indicate serum on request form.
                  2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Includes pyridoxol (pyridoxine), pyridoxal, pyridoxal phosphate, and pyridoxic acid Useful for evaluation of persons who present burning mouth syndrome and for evaluation of persons with chronic progressive nerve compression disorders, such as carpal tunnel and tarsal tunnel syndromes.
