1. Draw blood in light blue-top (citrate) tubes.  Spin down, remove
   plasma, spin plasma again, and place 1.0 mL of citrate platelet-
   poor plasma in plastic vial.  (Glass vials cannot be accepted.)
   NOTE:  A. Patient must not be receiving heparin.
             therapy.
          B. Double-centrifuged specimens are critical for accurate
             results as platelet contamination may cause spurious
             results.
2. For factors V, VIII, XI, and XII, draw blood in light blue-top
   (citrate) tube as a control specimen from a normal, unrelated person
   at the same time.  Spin down, remove plasma, spin plasma again, and
   place 1.0 mL of citrate platelet-poor plasma in plastic vial.
   Label clearly on outermost label NORMAL CONTROL.
   NOTE:  Double-centrifuged specimens are critical for accurate
          results as platelet contamination may cause spurious results.
3. Freeze patient and control specimens immediately at < or = -40
   degrees C, if possible.
4. Send patient and control specimens frozen on dry ice in the same
   shipping container.
   NOTE:  Each coagulation assay requested should have its own
          separate set of patient and control vials.
5. If priority specimen, mark requisition, give reason, and request
   a call-back.
NOTE:  1. Tests for ristocetin cofactor (9046) and von Willebrand
          antigen (9051) are recommended in conjunction with assay for
          factor VIII activity.
       2. Please complete a "Coagulation Request Form" and forward it
          with the specimen.  This form is supplied by Mayo Medical
          Laboratories.  Requisitions for this procedure cannot be
          processed unless the information requested is supplied.

Prothrombin Time-Based Assay COAGULATION TESTING IS HIGHLY COMPLEX, OFTEN REQUIRING THE PERFORMANCE OF MULTIPLE ASSAYS AND CORRELATION WITH CLINICAL INFORMATION. FOR THAT REASON, WE SUGGEST ORDERING "COAGULATION CONSULTATIONS".

Adults: 50-160%
