  AUTOPSY
Obtain a 1.0 cm(3) biopsy specimen of muscle/fascia from the thigh.
Place the specimen in a sterile, screw-capped container with sterile
Hank's balanced salt solution, Ringer's solution, or normal saline.
(Hank's balanced salt solution [Supply T132] is supplied by Mayo
Medical Laboratories.) Do not handle with hands. Label container with
patient's name and laboratory control number.  Send specimen
refrigerated. (Keep specimen cool with frozen coolant
April-October. Protect specimen from freezing by placing it in a
bubble-pack bag [Supply T055] supplied by Mayo Medical Laboratories.
Use refrigerated coolant November-March). SPECIMEN CANNOT BE FROZEN.
Promptly mail by Priority Mail to Mayo Medical Laboratories.
NOTE:  Please complete a "Cytogenetics/AFP Congenital Disorders
Request Form" (Supply T238) and forward it with the specimen.
This form is supplied by Mayo Medical Laboratories.

PRODUCTS OF CONCEPTION OR STILLBIRTH
Obtain a 1.0 cm(3) biopsy specimen of muscle/fascia from the thigh
and about 1.0 cm(3) of placenta (including chroionic villi). If a
fetus cannot be specifically identified, collect villus material or
tissue that appears to be of fetal origin. Do not handle with hands.
Place each specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container with Hank's
balanced salt solution, Ringer's solution, or normal saline. (Hank's
balanced salt solution [Supply T132] is supplied by Mayo Medical
Laboratories.) Do not handle with hands. Label each container with
the specimen type (e.g., placenta), patients name, and laboratory
control number. Send specimen refrigerated. (Keep specimen cool with
frozen coolant April-October. Protect specimen from freezing by
placing it in a bubble-pack bag [Supply T055] supplied by Mayo Medical

Specimen Acceptability

Methods
AUTOPSY Includes 2-banded karyotypes, analysis of 20 or more metaphases, and other techniques when required. STILLBIRTH OR PRODUCTS OF CONCEPTION Includes 2-banded karyotypes, analysis of 20 or more metaphases, and other techniques when required. Due to bacterial contamination or nonviable cells, these specimens fail about 25% of the time. Because there is a problem with maternal cell contamination, please attempt to identify and send fetal tissue for chromosome analysis.
