Collection Info

  20-50 mL from a 24-hour urine collection.  Add 5 g of sodium carbonate 
as preservative at start of collection.  Protect specimen from light.
NOTE:  1. The patient should be off medications, if possible, for at
          least 1 week.
       2. 24-HOUR VOLUME IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING.

Methods
High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with Fluorometric Detection Includes coproporphyrins, uroporphyrins, and intermediate porphyrins (heptacarboxyl, hexacarboxyl, pentacarboxyl, and tricarboxyl [when detected]). Includes colorimetric determination of porphobilinogen.
