  | 1. Discontinue epinephrine and epinephrine-like drugs at least 1 week before obtaining the sample. 2. The patient must refrain from eating, using tobacco, and drinking coffee or tea for at least 4 hours before the sample is drawn. 3. Calm the patient by giving complete instructions and reassurance regarding the procedure. 4. Have the patient rest for 30 minutes in the supine position in a quiet room. NOTE: Catecholamine tubes containing EDTA-sodium metabisulfite solution (Supply T066) must be used and are supplied by Mayo Medical Laboratories as needed (tubes have a 6-month expiration time.) Instructions for preparing tubes in your laboratory are on p. ,. (SERUM IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.) 5. Draw 20 mL of blood into 2 chilled tubes (10 mL per tube). 6. Separate plasma in a refrigerated centrifuge within 30 minutes of collection. 7. Freeze 7.0 mL of EDTA plasma immediately at -70 degrees C in plastic vials. 8. Send specimens frozen on dry ice. NOTE: Serum is not acceptable. |
