  | Draw blood in plain, red-top tube(s) following an overnight (12-14 hour) fast. Patient must not consume any alcohol for 24 hours before the specimen is drawn. Spin down and send 5.0 mL (pediatric: 3.0 mL) of serum refrigerated (keep specimen cool with frozen coolant April-October, refrigerated coolant November-March). Send specimen frozen in a plastic vial on dry ice if there is a delay in shipment of 24 hours or if mailing time exceeds 24 hours. NOTE: PATIENT'S AGE AND SEX ARE REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING. |

Cholesterol, Total Desirable: <200 mg/dL
Borderline high: 200-239 mg/dL
High: > or =240 mg/dL
Triglycerides, Total Normal: <150 mg/dL
Borderline high: 150-199 mg/dL
High: 200-499
Very high: > or =500 mg/dL
LDL Cholesterol Optimal: <100 mg/dL
Low risk: 100-129 mg/dL
Borderline high: 130-159 mg/dL
High: 160-189 mg/dL
Very high: > or =190 mg/dL
HDL Cholesterol Low HDL: <40 mg/dL
Normal: 40-60 mg/dL
Desirable: >60 mg/dL
Lp(a) Cholesterol Desirable: <5 mg/dL
Values >5 mg/dL may suggest
increased risk of coronary artery
disease.
