  | 1. Refrigerate specimen after collection. 2. Have the patient drink 75 g of the glucose tolerance beverage (100 g for pregnant patients). Ingestion should be completed within 5 minutes. 3. Draw the additional specimens at 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, and 5 hours, after the ingestion of the glucose tolerance. Draw fasting specimen specimen prior to start of test. NOTE: 1. Patient should be instructed to eat a high carbohydrate diet for 3 days prior to testing. 2. The patient should be screened with a 2-hour post prandial glucose test. Criteria for diagnosis of diabetes melitus are: Symptoms of diabetes and a casual plasma glucose >or = to 200 mg/dl (11 mmol/l). Casual is defined as any time of day without regard to time since last meal. The classic symptoms of diabetes include polyuria, polydipsia, and unexplained weight loss. Fasting plasma glucose > or = 126 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/l). Fasting is defined as no caloric intake for at least 8 hours. Two Hour plasma glucose >or= 200 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l) during an OGTT. The test should be performed as described by the World Health Organization, using a glucose load containing the equivalent of 75 g anhydrous glucose dissolved in water. 3. Label specimens with the appropriate timed interval. |
