Collection Info |
  | Preferred samples are collected directly into 1.2 mL ESR-Vacuum tubes. These tubes should be filled to the indicated fill line (60mm). Labels should be placed as close to the cap of the tube as possible as lower placement may interere with results reading. Blood from a lavender top EDTA tube is also acceptable. Samples are stable for 24 hours when stored at 2-10 degrees C. |
Clinical Utilities
ESR results become elevated due to the formation of erythrocyte rouleaux
,which is caused mainly by alterations in plasma and erythrocyte factors.
Erythrocyte sedimentation is accelerated by an increase in the plasma
concentration of "acute phase proteins", which are elevated in acute
tissue damage, chronic infection, chronic inflammation, and pregnancy.
