Clinical Utilities
Echoviruses are associated with clinical syndromes which range from acute respiratory diseases to infections of the central nervous system. This test detects antibody titers for 4 of the 31 echovirus serotypes: types 4, 9, 11, and 16. All four are associated with periodic epidemic outbreaks. The following disorders are associated with these serotypes: aseptic meningitis (all types with 4 and 9 common); paralysis (all four); encephalitis, ataxia, or Guillain-Barre (9; occasionally 4 and 11); exanthem (all four); respiratory disease (4, 9 and 11; occasionally 16); pericarditis and epidemic myalgia (9); hepatic disturbances (4 and 9).
