The families of critically ill patients often forget their own need to take a break from the hospital routine. One family in particular appreciated the fact that Ann Clancy-Klemme RN, CCRN (ICU) was paying close attention.
"She brought in her tape player and various soothing tapes for my mom to listen to help keep her calm," one woman said. "Ann has a wonderful patient/family relationship. She even offered us her golf clubs so we could go out and have some fun. I felt very safe leaving my mom in her care. Her professionalism -- combined with a very positive and humorous attitude -- keeps the staff and family working together for the best interest of my mom."
Ann's co-workers offered other perspectives on the September Employee of the Month.
"She lives in Houghton and commutes rain, shine or snow," said RN David Shea. "I asked her why she does this when she could work closer to home. Her reply was simple. She loves working ICU and the people who work at MGH."
Joe Wixtrom, RN, called attention to Ann's community spirit.
"She actively volunteers in her home community in crisis intervention," Wixtrom said. "This quality, along with her ever present smile and exceptional nursing care, make her an invaluable member of the MGH team."
Ann has spent eight of her 10 years at MGH in ICU, and has also worked in the Cardiac Unit. She is certified in ATLS and ACLS, and recently was among a select group of nurses to earn certification as a critical care nurse (CCRN).
"I'm appreciative of the family member who took the time and made the effort to recognize my work," Ann said. "However, ICU nursing is not a solo performance. I'm fortunate to work with a great team of people."
Said acting CEO Bill Nemacheck: "Our staff is known for finding unique solutions to the needs of our patients and families. Ann has certainly gone beyond what's expected, and this family will never forget her."
