UP Health System – Marquette Recognized Nationally for Excellence in Heart Care
April 4, 2017
April 4, 2017 – MARQUETTE – UP Health System – Marquette achieved national recognition this week for having the second lowest heart attack readmission rate in the country. The news comes from Becker’s Infection Control & Clinical Quality, a leading healthcare industry publication in the U.S., who compiled data from July 2012 through June 2015. This is the most recent data available on 30-day readmission rates from acute myocardial infarctions.¹
Across the US, only 51 hospitals were recognized for having a readmission rate less than 15 percent. UP Health System – Marquette was the only hospital in Michigan recognized in this report.
Recent CMS data also shows that UP Health System – Marquette ranks better than national averages for avoiding complications for hip/knee replacements, MRSA and overall readmission rates.
“We are very pleased with this announcement from Becker’s – it highlights the exciting change and process improvements happening at our hospital,” said Wael Khouli, MD, Chief Medical Officer of UP Health System – Marquette. “We take great care with all of our patients and are continually motivated by our mission of making communities healthier.”
Dr. Khouli continued, “These results come from not only our exceptional medical staff in our Heart & Vascular team, but also from Emergency Room physicians and staff and our nurses; it is truly a team effort. This is just one indication of the great work and compassion to which our entire staff commits, every day, for every patient.”
The Heart & Vascular team at UP Health System – Marquette includes world-class interventional cardiologists who perform life-saving procedures for heart attack patients at the hospital. The hospital has also added Dr. Bradford Blakeman, Cardiovascular Surgeon, to their medical staff. “With the successful recruitment of Dr. Blakeman, the residents of the Upper Peninsula will once again have 24/7 access to elective and emergent open heart services,” said Dr. Khouli.
UP Health System – Marquette received full Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Primary PCI Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC) in December 2016 and saw the addition of a new, state-of-the-art catheterization lab in January 2017.
