August 2, 2016

August 2nd, 2016 – MARQUETTE - UP Health System – Marquette announced its re-verification as a Level II Trauma Center from the American College of Surgeons.
A site visit by representatives from the American College of Surgeons was conducted in May 2016. Dr. Paul Bankey and Lynn Haas, RN, MSN found that the department was well prepared for the visit, and that an ongoing action plan has significantly strengthened the program.
Trauma patients are those who have suffered critical injuries from an external source. This includes falls, vehicle crashes, and numerous other life-threatening accidents. UP Health System – Marquette is the only Level I or Level II trauma center that is able and accredited to provide crucial, life-saving services within a 160-mile radius of Marquette, MI.
This week, UP Health System – Marquette received its official letter of re-verification from the American College of Surgeons. Tammy Luoma, RN, Trauma Program Manager at UP Health System – Marquette, said, “We take a lot of pride in our program. We have been diligent in improving our processes and quality measures. We have made significant strides in our injury prevention program, community outreach, charting, monitoring the program and resolving issues, and reviewing all of our cases closely.”
Luoma continued, “Every chart is reviewed every day. We’re monitoring everything very closely to ensure the best care is provided, here, that the correct care is administered, and that we are constantly improving as the leading trauma department in the region.”
Looking toward the future, Luoma cited exciting additions to the program, including the incorporation of high-tech medical mannequins for staff training, ongoing educational programs within the hospital in the Emergency Room, Operating Room, and Intensive Care Unit, and offering Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) training and Emergency Nursing for Pediatrics training.
