When Should I See a Rheumatologist?

Many of us suffer from general musculoskeletal pain from time to time. But, if you have pain in your joints, low back or neck, or progressive muscle weakness that is severe and persists for more than a few days, you should schedule an appointment with your primary care provider, who can refer you to our specialists. Rheumatic diseases can be difficult to identify in their earliest stages, and you can have everyday symptoms that could be indicative of much more complex conditions. Rheumatologists are experts in this area and are trained to evaluate all of your symptoms to diagnose and treat your condition.

What Types of Conditions Are Treated by a Rheumatologist?

Rheumatologists are experts in diagnosing and treating more than one hundred rheumatic diseases, including but not limited to rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, systemic lupus, Sjogren syndrome, systemic sclerosis, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, polymyalgia rheumatica, temporal arteritis and systemic vasculitis. They also are experts in diagnosing and treating tendinitis and bursitis, severe cases of gouty arthritis and Lyme arthritis.
