NMU Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports hosting
Nov. 5 events to raise money for breast cancer

VAST of Marquette is fighting breast cancer in a big way.

“No. 1, it’s a great, great cause. We’ve all been touched, in one way or another, by breast cancer,” VAST partner Chris Van Abel said.

“Secondly, we’re proud to support projects and technologies that benefit breast cancer patients, and, finally, we love the collaborative spirit between Northern Michigan University and Marquette General working together to create such a unique event. We’re looking forward to being part of it.”

VAST has agreed to be the presenting sponsor of the 2011 Pink Experience, a unique fundraising partnership between the Marquette General Foundation and the NMU Athletics and Recreational Sports Department to help raise money for the Breast Cancer Care Program at Marquette General.

The 2011 Pink Experience, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5. will consist of a women’s volleyball match against Findlay at 4 p.m. at the Vandament Arena, followed by a CCHA hockey game at 7:35 p.m. pitting the Wildcats against Notre Dame.

Brian Gaudreau, Associate Director of NMU Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports, said the university is looking forward to being a Pink Experience partner.

“It’s a great cause and NMU is happy to be a part of it,” Gaudreau said. “Our goal this year is to pack the Berry Events Center for the hockey game and have a ‘Pink Out.’  It’s very exciting.”

Proceeds from the 2011 events at NMU will help enhance MGH’s stereotactic breast biopsy technology.  This technology is essential in the early diagnosis and treatment.

In securing a highly visible and respected corporate partner in VAST, the Marquette General Foundation is optimistic the Pink Experience will be bigger and better, raising money for a cause that touches many people.

“We’re excited that VAST has agreed to be the presenting sponsor of this terrific event,” said Pat Bray, President of the Marquette General Foundation. “VAST is well known for giving back in a number of ways and felt this cause fit its mission.”

The Marquette General Foundation and NMU are currently planning the day’s events. WLUC TV 6, The Mining Journal and The Point radio are media sponsors for the Pink Experience.

Last year, the day-long event, which netted more than $15,000, featured a women’s swimming and diving meet; a women’s soccer match; a community walk; and a men’s hockey game.
