Cardiac Rehab has new treadmill, purchased through Foundation gifts
Walking at a steady pace, completely in tune with her exercise needs, Andrea Dlesk of Marquette beamed about the new Cybex Sport Plus Treadmill she was using in the Cardiac Rehab gymnasium at Marquette General.
“This is a tremendous addition to this department,” said Dlesk, a retired Marquette General Hospital physician who has been a cardiac rehab patient for the past five years. “It has an easy-to-use control board with many more options. It provides illustrations, which are especially important for cardiovascular fitness. It’s a very sophisticated machine.”

The treadmill is the latest addition to Cardiac Rehab at MGH. The $6,100 treadmill, which didn’t make the list of funded capital items for 2009, was purchased through unrestricted gifts made to the Marquette General Foundation the last fiscal year. Unrestricted gifts are given by donors to help provide philanthropic funding in the areas of greatest need.
Larry Bergwall is the Cardiac Rehab Director/Working Manager at Marquette General. He said the new treadmill has been a big hit among cardiac rehab patients.
“Patients really like the ease of operating the treadmill and the safety of it starting at a slow speed,” Bergwall said. “We are very happy to have it.”
Dlesk uses Cardiac Rehab services three times a week. The new machine, she said, enhances an already great product.
“These people work miracles here,” Dlesk said. “It’s nice to have good machines and work with people with so much expertise.”
This marks the second time within the calendar year that Cardiac Rehab has been the recipient of philanthropic gifts. This spring, an anonymous Marquette couple provided funding for a new, enhanced closed-captioning television.
The new treadmill is one of several deferred capital purchases made by the Foundation using more than $75,000 in unrestricted gifts. Other examples will soon follow.
