Why I chose MSU College of Human Medicine UP Campus?
I chose the UP campus because they had a strong program for Family Medicine. They mandated students take an extra four weeks of family medicine rotation. Additionally, I really liked the small campus size, and the fact I would be working directly with Attendings most of the time. I also LOVED the administrative staff in the MSU UP office. They made life easier!!

Ashley Parent

Undergraduate:
BS in Biology, Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI

Why I chose MSU College of Human Medicine UP Campus?
I chose the UP campus because the program's small size allows students more autonomy. There are few residents and no fellows so students work directly with attendings. As a result, our attendings get to know us well and can provide mentorship and one-on-one teaching. This allows for very thoughtful evaluations and letters. Also, I was eager to return home to Marquette!

Hobbies/Interests outside of work?
Hiking, reading, trivia, art

Hometown:
Marquette, MI

Eric Schaff

Undergraduate:
BS in Biology, Northern Michigan University, Marquette MI

Why I chose MSU CHM UP Campus?
I applied to attend the UP campus along with my original application to MSU CHM because I knew that I wanted to return to Marquette. I loved my time in the city while I attended NMU because it is one of the few places that you can spend a short break at the beach, mountain biking, or skiing. As students we also get a tremendous learning opportunity as we are mainly working one on one with attending physicians. Each year we have students match at great programs and I think that is due to the great support we have both from our administration and also physician instructors.

Hobbies/interests:
Skiing, mountain biking, backpacking, kayaking, coffee

Hometown:

Why I chose MSU College of Human Medicine UP Campus?

Chelsea Meloche

Undergraduate:
BA in Biomedical Sciences, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI

Why I chose MSU College of Human Medicine UP Campus?
I was interested in how medicine works in a rural population including how a physician may need to change their role to address the different needs of such communities. I wanted to explore how a smaller community would influence the involvement of physicians outside of their medical role. I've been curious in how various procedural aspects differ from urban practices.

Hobbies/Interests outside of work?
I love to enjoy the outdoors during all seasons--downhill skiing, water skiing, boating, volleyball, softball, hiking...really anything active.

Hometown:

Caitlin Polakowski

Undergraduate:
BA in Biomedical Science, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI

Why I chose MSU College of Human Medicine UP Campus?
I am from Houghton, here in the Upper Peninsula – I love the area, the people, and my family & fiancé are here.  The opportunity to get to know the attending physicians and work one-on-one is a unique and unbeatable experience.  Being close with my colleagues is important to me and having such a small class up here enables that.  And lastly, the humbleness of the physicians and staff here makes it an overall lovely place to be.

Hobbies/Interests outside of work?
I enjoy singing and playing the guitar, doing “girly” things like painting my nails and decorating my house. I like to be outside and on the water, whether it be sailing or just idling in the lake.  I have a dog that’s more like a child, so of course I love taking care of/being with her.

I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter (and our smelly Basset Hound). We love getting outside and enjoying this beautiful place that we are privileged to call home. I love to hike, fish, rock climb, mountain bike, and ice climb (Who am I kidding? I'm in med school and have a baby!!). I enjoy cooking and staying up late to try to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. I enjoy sitting on my front porch reading a good book. Lastly, my final interests are egg rolls from Rice Paddy. Life is great up here! :)
