Why I chose Marquette Family Medicine
Residency Program?

I was first drawn to the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program because it is an unopposed program that offered training in a rural setting. I wanted to train somewhere I could get a full spectrum experience that would prepare me well for whatever my future practice setting may be. When visiting for my interview, everyone I met seemed to be truly dedicated to the residency program and proud to be a part of it. Additionally, it offered an unmatched setting in which to cultivate my outside interests and foster work/ life balance. There is also a large University nearby where my husband can complete his nursing degree.

SECOND YEAR RESIDENTS – CLASS OF 2020

Victoria Bobik, MD

Medical School:
American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine

Undergraduate:
BA in Biology, University of Delaware, Newark DE

Why I chose Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program?
I wanted a program where I could get training treating underserved, rural populations, while still seeing a good number of patients. I liked that MGH is a smaller program with a lot of individual and hands-on teaching opportunities, yet the hospital is large enough that we will see a large variety of medical problems. I felt that the program allowed the residents to pursue their own interests if they wished and that there are plenty of opportunities to perform procedures.

Professional Interests:
I am keeping my options open, but as of now, I would like to work as an outpatient doctor in a full-scope clinic. I am still working on narrowing down my interests.

Hobbies/Interests outside of work?
I enjoy traveling to new places, playing soccer, and cooking new recipes

Undergraduate:
BA in Physics, Northern Michigan University, Marquette MI

Why I chose Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program?
I liked the thought of being able to “do everything” from acute to chronic care and across the age spectrum, thus family medicine was right for me.  Marquette offered a unique combination of an unopposed program at a regional referral facility, with the side benefit of being where my family considers home.  The residency program invests much time and care into developing residents as a whole physician, and it showed when I rotated here as a student.

Professional Interests:
Emergency, wilderness/austere, and osteopathic manipulative medicine.

Hobbies/Interests outside of work?
Spending time with family – generally enjoying what the UP has to offer.

Why I chose Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program? -
The first time I came to Marquette, I knew it was a place I could call home. I'm now living my dream of being a physician and continuing my training in a program that I have the upmost confidence in. The people are not only extremely intelligent, but kind and genuine. By coming to such a rigorous program with high standards, I knew that I could become the well trained doctor I always knew I could be. I knew I wanted to come to a program that allowed me to transform my training into what my actual practice will look like some day.

Professional Interests:
I'm particularly interested in preventative medicine, hospital medicine, and combating the opioid epidemic our entire nation faces. However, my interests grow the more I learn and I'm very excited to evolve during my training over the next three years.

Hobbies/Interests outside of work?
Lake Superior has a special place in my heart and I absolutely love experiencing all four seasons living next to it. That being said, I enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, rollerblading, going to the gym, jogging, and biking. I look forward to camping when I can. Marquette is a special place with all of the wonderful outdoor activities I could ask for.

R. Anne Reinertsen, MD

Medical School:
Wayne State University, School of Medicine

Undergraduate:
BS in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI

Why I chose Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program?
I spent my summers growing up on Lake Michigamme, where I developed a deep love for the U.P. and always dreamed of making it my home. I was ecstatic to find an amazing, unopposed residency program that let me make that dream a reality. This program offers an unparalleled opportunity to learn “full scope” Family Medicine – outpatient, inpatient, OB, community outreach, and everything in between.

Professional Interests:
My interests are wide-ranging but include: womens health (especially obstetrical care and lactation), dermatology, and preventive medicine.

Hobbies/Interests outside of work?
In my spare time I love spending time with my husband, daughter, and our dog.  We enjoy many outdoor activities including water and snow skiing, fly-fishing, hiking, biking, and bird watching. Indoors, I love spending time in my kitchen cooking, and I dabble in watercolor painting.

Hometown: Kalamazoo, MI

Jeffrey Sweers, MD

Name & Medical School:
Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine – Grand Rapids

Undergraduate:
BA in Biology/Chemistry, Hope College, Holland, MI

Why I chose Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program?
With a love of family medicine naturally comes a love of variety - variety in acuity of patients, in breadth of experience, and in depth of medicine. Training in such an environment maximizes education while it fosters fascination. Maintaining wonder toward the art of medicine is vitally important. The Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program encourages wonder by offering opportunities in all of these, and it offers them with a proximity not easily replicated.

Professional Interests:
Part of the beauty of family medicine is not needing to choose professional interests.  Niches are naturally carved over time, and with their development will come definition.  That being said, I find particular intrigue in mental health and pediatrics.

Hobbies/Interests outside of work?
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter.  I admit my family and I are beginning to fall in love with the Marquette outdoors.  Additionally, I enjoy cooking and reading for pleasure, with a preference for smoked meats and dystopian fiction.
