Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program
Educational Excellence in an Exceptional Environment
The Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program is an unopposed, dually accredited family medicine residency program located in beautiful Marquette, Michigan. Our community-based, three-year training program trains both allopathic and osteopathic physicians following Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and American Osteopathic Association (AOA) guidelines. Graduates of the program are qualified to manage the full spectrum of family medicine.
Founded in 1979 to provide young doctors with medical experience in the rural setting, the program has graduated 180 with many alumni practicing in rural Midwest locations.
The program’s intimate size allows for tailored training to meet the individual needs of each resident. Training takes place at UP Health System - Marquette a Duke LifePoint Hospital, within the clinic as well as at rural sites throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

A Message from the Residency Director
All of us involved in the Family Medicine Residency Program here in Marquette, Michigan are very proud of what we have accomplished since our inception in 1979. We have graduated nearly 200 Family Physicians, with the vast majority practicing family medicine in rural America – most here in the northern Midwest.
We take great pride in our ability to tailor training to the individual needs of each resident. Getting the training one wants – and needs - is critical to our success as the changing face of primary medicine health care continues to occur. We have taken great pride in the development of our own version of a Patient Centered Medical Home, with Practice Partner EMR assisting in our patient management. We have also strengthened our inpatient teaching service, to allow residents more independence and also one-on-one teaching of inpatient medicine. Our weekly rural outreach obstetrics clinics provide focused care for pregnant women in rural areas that would otherwise have no obstetric providers.
Sending residents during their second year to rural sites for a month has proven to be remarkably successful in giving a true flavor of this kind of medicine at the core of our mission. Many of these sites are run by alumni of the program, providing a continuous and strong bond to the training program. We look forward to continuing to be innovative as we adjust to the needs of our health care system. Being strongly supported by UP Health System and its Accountable Care Organization – Superior Health Partners – remains essential to our growth and vitality.
Having dedicated much of my career in health care to the success of this program, I remain confident that we will continue to train the family physicians needed for the care of our population for decades to come.
