Powers is a recent graduate of Rush University College of Health Sciences in Chicago, IL, where she completed her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL.

Powers has previously held roles as a Certified Nursing Assistant, caring for patients in a skilled nursing facility, and Personal Care Assistant, providing care for a patient with Alzheimer's disease, in Illinois . She spent an additional 9 months training with a focus in Geriatric medicine. She holds Physician Assistant Board Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Powers takes a special interest in providing care for patients who suffer from dementia.

Powers relocated to Marquette with her fiancé, Chris Thoms, and her dog and three cats. Thoms will be teaching 7th grade reading and history at Bothwell Middle School. Powers’ hobbies include outdoor activities, particularly biking, hiking, kayaking, and snowboarding. She enjoys listening to live music, spending time with family and friends, and being a foster home for animals who are looking for their forever home.
